Science Based Biological Dentistry

Biological dentists realize that toxic materials affect our dental and physiological health. Biocompatible materials and techniques are selected when working in the mouth. One of the primary concerns is that of mercury in amalgam fillings. It is not common knowledge that "silver" amalgam fillings are 50% mercury. The mercury fills constantly emit mercury vapor which at room temperature is tasteless, odorless, and colorless. This vapor is readily absorbed into the bloodstream and can harm the immune, urinary, cardiac, respiratory and digestive systems. In laboratory conditions, mercury caused brain cell damage is identical to that caused by Alzheimer's disease. There is published research that shows that mercury is more harmful than lead, arsenic, and cadmium.

Dr. Kim is an accredited member of the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) which is an organization of dentists, physicians and researchers involved in peer-reviewed scientific research, education and the promotion of biological dentistry. Dr. Kim's office has special equipment to help safely remove mercury fills for those that wish to have their amalgams removed. A tremendous amount of mercury vapor is released upon removal so special techniques and suction devices can help minimize exposure for both patient and dental team. Some physicians may recommend special supplements to further help dealing with the mercury removal process. Dr. Kim is happy to work with doctors who want mercury removed from their patients and will support their protocols to deal with the increased mercury load after removal.

The "smoking tooth" video is a shocking piece which shows actual mercury vapor being released from an extracted tooth which has a mercury fill in it.

There is a controversy surrounding fluoride and its potential harmful effects. Dr. Kim offers several alternatives to fluoride treatment using products that have research to back their effectiveness in fighting decay. A shift towards acidity reduction in the mouth is a newer approach gaining momentum to help prevent cavities and the use of xylitol in products show much promise in decay prevention.
