Are you missing teeth and wanting to have a functional and healthy mouth? Or, have you been told that teeth need to be removed from your mouth and are wondering what to do? Or perhaps you have had teeth removed for health reasons and are looking for dental materials that are compatible with your body? In this blog I am going to discuss the various options that are available when it comes to replacing missing teeth.
As a member or the IAOMT, I am a dentist that is focused in utilizing a biological and more holistic approach when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. My Inland Empire BioIdentical Cosmetic dental office offers ways to evaluate what dental materials are best suited for your body. This is important for many individuals, especially those with compromised immune systems. This information allows me to determine whether a fixed bridge or implant would be best for your body.
Fixed bridge vs. Implant:
Here is a great animated video that visually shows the difference between a fixed bridge and dental implant:
A fixed bridge for many decades was the only option for providing function where a tooth was missing. A fixed bridge is a procedure where each tooth adjacent to the missing tooth is “shaved down” in order to prepare it for a crown. The final bridge includes 3 teeth; a crown for each prepared tooth that serve as “anchors” for the fake tooth placed in the middle. It is permanently cemented on the teeth and typically lasts around 10 -15 years. However overtime, the bone surrounding the area is weakened due to the previous loss of tooth and extra stress on each adjacent tooth. This can lead to further bone destruction or eventual tooth loss over a long period of time. A fixed bridge is still a great option for individuals, however it greatly depends on the area of the bridge, expected tooth longevity etc.
An implant is a newer technology that provides ideal chewing function without damaging the adjacent teeth surrounding the missing tooth. The placement of a dental implant in a missing tooth area “mimics” the missing tooth, thus bone loss is not typically an issue. A dental implant does however need sufficient bone in the area where it is to be placed. The dental implant is placed into the “jaw bone” area with ease and left to integrate with the jaw bone for approximately 3-6 months. Once the X-ray shows that the bone has surrounded the implant, then the final implant crown is made. Implants typically will last a life time, and are a better option for those who are wanting a more long lasting option for replacing their missing teeth. Another benefit of an implant is that it is easy to clean and floss around, just like your normal teeth.

We have come a long way in the dental profession when it comes to how we repair fillings and remove cavities. Dentists used to remove a much more significant amount of tooth structure in preparation for a filling, however now we know that this is not an ideal approach. The newer approach when placing fillings is to remove as little tooth structure as possible, causing minimal trauma to the tooth itself. With less trauma comes a lesser of a chance for a root canal to occur. The following link is a demonstration of the Waterlase laser technology on the T.V. show The Doctors.
As a dentist trained in the Waterlase drill-less dentistry technique; I am able to precisely remove cavities with minimal tooth structure lost. This high-tech machine also allows me to provide pain-free and injection-free way to treat my patients’. It is wonderful for patients’ to be able to leave my Riverside BioIdentical and Cosmetic Dental office without being numb, so that they can carry on with their daily tasks. it is also a much better option when removing cavities from children. The children in our dental practice are able to enjoy each dental visit as they know that they will not have to have “numbing juice.”
Along with using the latest in dental technology, my BioIdentical dental office only uses materials that are safe and compatible with our bodies. It is our goal to be able to serve our patients’ with the utmost care for their dental health along with total body wellness. Please call and speak to one of my friendly team members to schedule your next pain-free and drill-free dental appointments. (951)686-3666.
Fluoride has been a subject of controversy for many years, it is added to our drinking water, it is in most of our toothpastes and mouth rinses, we rinse with it at the dentist office, and most pediatricians and dentists use it as a gold standard for the prevention of tooth decay. Fluoride has been added to our drinking water for many decades with the premise of reducing tooth decay. However, very few studies were conducted on the toxic effects of fluoride on animals and on human tissue. Interestingly, our government has allowed water fluoridation regardless of the facts and data they have received in regards to fluorides harmful effects.
Simply, fluoride is a very strong toxin which DOES NOT prevent tooth decay. As a member of the I.A.O.M.T., mounds of research articles affirm that fluoride is not what prevents tooth decay. Rather, it is the acid-producing bacteria that cause tooth decay therefore decreasing the acid prevents tooth decay.
So why are we continually adding it to our drinking water when research has proven that fluoride is toxic and dangerous? There has definitely been a disconnect between the medical and dental community when it comes to truly researching the benefits and health risks when it comes to fluoride. So for now, it is up to us as consumers to be aware of the dangers ourselves and our families are being exposed to on a daily basis. My Bioidentical Cosmetic Dental office does not promote fluoride use in any mouthwash or toothpaste. Instead, we focus on reducing/inhibiting the acid-releasing bacteria to prevent tooth decay.
How is fluoride toxic to our system?
Fluoride changes the enzymes in our body, which are the building blocks of our cells. Over time genetic mutations occur causing permanent damage virtually all of the systems in the body. Damage can occur to the following systems: immune system, digestive system, respiratory system, kidney function, blood circulation, brain function, liver function, and thyroid function.
Our Southern California Bioidentical Dental office routinely offers nutritional advice for dental and total body wellness. We believe that oral health and total body wellness depend on one another for balance. As many of us know, soda and diet soda drinks are known to cause the breakdown of tooth enamel. This leads to high amounts of acidity in the mouth, causing cavities. Once the tooth enamel is weakened, it is difficult to rebuild and strengthen before a cavity is developed. Aside from soft drinks, any drink with citric acid and artificial sweeteners using aspartame or Splenda is extremely harmful to your health. Aspartame was approved by the FDA as a food additive in the early 1980’s. Interestingly, the FDA denied the approval of aspartame for 15 years prior to this date. With persistence and politics, aspartame was approved with little research showing dangers of it as an additive to food and drinks. To date, there has been more than 90 independent studies proving the dangers and health risks associated with aspartame aka Nutrasweet. As for Splenda sweetener, it was discovered first for its pesticide abilities. Unfortunately, we are the test group to determine the long term effects of these dangerous additives. The light at the end of the tunnel is that sweeteners like Xylitol and Stevia are healthy natural alternatives and are safe for diabetics.
Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol “is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic.” They recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.
Here is a list of serious health problems associated with aspartame:
So you think you may have sleep apnea or a sleep disorder? Or, your spouse or partner has mentioned that you snore excessively or stop breathing during your sleep. Are you always exhausted and cannot find out the reason why? These are several reasons that it would be beneficial to participate in a sleep study. A sleep study helps to determine what your body, brain, and hormones do while you are in a state of sleep. Sleep studies can be done either in a medical facility or at home. Both ways require equipment to be worn overnight, however the at home test is much more accurate. When we rest in our own beds, we sleep better therefore giving the sleep study the most correct information.
What do sleep studies show?
Sleep studies show the amount of the three sleep stages that occur during the night. Also the study will show the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide processed by the system. Most importantly, it allows us to see if the system has chronic inflammation, pH imbalances, or hormonal imbalances. By looking at all of the combined data, a sleep study gives us a look at what is going on with the system. Many doctors unfortunately, do not combine all of the data to determine the real reason behind any sleep apnea or sleep disorders an individual experiences.
As a Biological dentist, I am always striving to achieve excellence for my patients’. This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend an advanced course in sleep apnea and reading sleep studies. My Biological and Cosmetic Dental wellness office does offer snore-guards and sleep apnea devices to those who cannot tolerate the CPAP machine. I am pleased to share that after this course, I am confident in providing a comprehensive reading of any sleep study. An individual can learn many things regarding the results of their sleep study.
If you or someone you know is experiencing sleep apnea, sleep disorders, or excessing snoring please contact my Southern California Biological dental wellness office at (951)686-3666. Also please contact my office if you are hoping to learn more about your sleep study. We are located just off of the 91-freeway in Riverside.
